Pre Nax Holy/Disc Priest Gear Guide

This is a list of the best several items for each slot outside of 10/25 mans to help with gearing up and deciding which heroics/reputations to prioritize.

The items are ranked more or less from best to worst.
An item with (Disc) next to it is going to be better for a disc spec than the items above it. I also weighed haste fairly low because generally regen is going to be your bigger problem pre-naxx and alot of the haste pieces have no spirit or mp/5 at all..The haste pieces are worth holding on to though as they will be more useful as you start trading off regen for healing output.

I havent gotten to all the quest items or craftables yet, but I'll add them when I can.

A general rule of thumb when looking at items heading into naxx is
For Holy
Int > Spirit > Spellpower > Crit > Mp/5 > Haste

For Disc
Int > Spellpower = Crit > Spirit > Mp/5 > Haste

WIth BOK, Int converts to crit at 150/132 per for Holy and Disc respectively. Also, your Shadowfiend, Prayer of Hope and Replenishment effects all operate off max mana and spirit regen has been affected by INT since 2.3, making INT as valuable if not more valuable than spirit for regen.

When comparing Spirit to Mp/5, you can assume:
10 Spirit = 4 Mp/5 for Holy (+25% spirit to spellpower) and
10 Spirit = 2 Mp/5 for Disc

I wouldnt start 10 man Naxx without at the very least 1500 or so Spellpower self-buffed and around 250 Mp/5 casting (more if you're not using Insightful Meta.) Even with these numbers, you'll run into problems in several areas but you should be able to progress fairly comfortably through the first couple wings. Some are saying this number is a little high, but assuming the tanks and dps are geared at about the same level I think thats about the minimum for a smooth run. Its also very easy to attain even with mostly blues if you upgrade from BC to WOTLK gear.





Head

If you're not an engineer, its going to be pretty slim pickings on good head slot items. Theres really not a whole lot outside of drops from heroic instances. The Crown off Eregos in Heroic Oculus is very good though and Oculus is more about strategy than a gear check so you should be able to get through there even on mediocre gear if you and your group know the fights. If you dont want to try Oculus just yet, the Shroud of Tempation from a quest to do Drak'tharon Keep on normal isn't a bad choice, though it lacks a meta slot.

For Enchants, the +spellpower/crit enchant from Revered with Kirin Tor is probably your best bet, but the +SP/Mp/5 enchant from Wyrmcrest works too if you're desperate for any regen you can get.

For Metas, The Insightful Earthsiege Diamond is the most useful, and easiest to equip, metagem. A 45-second ICD proc that restores 600 mana, and 21 intellect to gain crit and regen make this the best metagem available.
Revitalizng Earthstiege (+ 8 mp/5 and +3% on critical heals) or Ember Skyflare (+25 spellpower and 2% intellect) are both decent choices, but still inferior to the Insightful.

Neck
The Dragon's Prow Amulet is very good for being a BOE blue. Its better than the emblem neck if your primary concern is regen and is your best bet if you can find it on the AH for a reasonable price. The Timeless Beads of Eternos from N-Oculus is a good pre-heroic choice if you can't find the Dragons Prow Amulet on the AH. If you cant get either of the above and dont have at least the ZA neck, the Amulet of Tranquil mind from an Utgaarde Keep quest isnt too bad. Blood Sun Necklace can be made by cheaply by a JC if you dont want to bother with Utgaarde Keep, but the quest reward is still slightly better.

Runecaster's Mantle, another BOE world drop, is the best choice Pre-Naxx and better than anything from BC short of T6. If you can't find it on the AH, Mantle of the Intrepid Explorer from a quest in Normal Halls of Stone is an upgrade from any BC item other than T6.
